Contractors License Exam

The Contractors License exams are held in Oakland, Sacramento, Fresno, Ventura, Long Beach, Norwalk, San Bernardino and San Diego.

With the exception of Fresno, this is also where you will take your 2-day class (Norwalk and Long Beach students attend class in Santa Monica).

Fresno students can attend in Sacramento or any of our locations. The Contractors License exams are given every weekday. Normally it takes the State Contractors License Board about seven weeks from the time you apply until you sit to take the test. Right now it is taking about five months because of the state employee hiring freeze imposed due to the current state budget crisis. About 15,000 people take the Contractors License exam each year.

The Contractor License exams are multiple-choice. That is, you choose A, B, C, or D. There is no writing. The law test will consist of 115 questions. The Contractor trade exams vary in length depending on your classification (See  Classifications  for a list). There are about 80 to 125 questions on the trade, on average. The test is timed, but typically the state gives you more than enough time to complete the tests.
